FACE TO FACE DELIVERY OVERVIEW

This Height Safety Supervisor course equips participants with the advanced skills and knowledge required to supervise work at height, conduct detailed risk assessments, and develop, rehearse, and review rescue plans in line with current health and safety legislation.

Delivered by experienced trainers in a practical, hands-on learning environment, the course focuses on the responsibilities of a Height Safety Supervisor, including legal requirements for rescue planning and response. Participants will engage in interactive training to apply risk management processes, identify suitable rescue techniques and equipment, and effectively plan for incidents involving suspended casualties using fall arrest systems.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This certification is nationally recognised. The Statement is issued by Pinnacle Safety and Training (RTO 40496).

ASSESSMENT INFORMATION

Assessment for this course includes both theory and practical components to confirm participants' knowledge and application of height safety supervision. The theory assessment covers key areas such as legislation, roles and responsibilities, risk management processes, and rescue planning requirements.

The practical assessment requires participants to review existing rescue procedures and develop a detailed rescue plan for a height-related incident. Participants will demonstrate their ability to identify appropriate equipment, outline rescue methods, and coordinate the planning and rehearsal of a simulated height rescue scenario in line with legal and organisational requirements.

COURSE SELECTION

This course is suited to supervisors, safety personnel, and experienced workers responsible for overseeing work at height activities and ensuring compliant rescue planning within their workplace. It is ideal for those working in industries such as construction, mining, utilities, telecommunications, and industrial maintenance who need the skills and knowledge to conduct risk assessments, develop effective rescue procedures, and coordinate height safety responses in line with current WHS legislation and organisational requirements.

PREREQUISITES & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Prerequisites

To ensure participants can apply fundamental safe work at height principles, participants must hold

  • RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights (or equivalent). This certificate must have been attained within the past 12 months.

Participants must provide a copy of their certificate prior to attending training. Students can complete our Working at Heights Supervisor (2 Day) course which covers the prerequsite requirements and Height Safety Supervisor.

Evidence is not required if the certificate was issued by Pinnacle Safety and Training. 

Age requirements

Participants must be at least 18 years of age. Due to course restrictions, enrolments will not be accepted from individuals under 18 years of age, even with parental or guardian consent. Refer to our FAQ for more information.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills (LLN)

Participants are required to have at least a Year 10 level of numeracy, literacy and communication skills and be able to read and write in English.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) & CREDIT TRANSFERS

Recognition of Prior Learning

Pinnacle Safety and Training does not offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for this course. Due to the duration and cost of this short course, RPL assessment would have limited value to participants.

Credit Transfer

Pinnacle Safety and Training offers Credit Transfers for this training product. A Credit Transfer is granted where the previously attained unit of competency has been achieved. After enrolment, participants are eligible to submit a Credit Transfer application. 

It is important to note that while the unit of competency is eligible for Credit Transfer, the participant will receive a Statement of Attainment without the specific “Height Safety Supervisor” course name listed. This is due to the course being delivered in a contextualised format with specific methodologies, and course completion through attendance is required to achieve the intended learning outcomes.

COURSE WORKLOAD

All training and assessment requirements are completed within the course duration. Participants are not required to undertake any additional study or assessment outside of the scheduled course time.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Australian Standard AS1891.4 recognises the role of a Height Safety Supervisor as requiring the following: “Training and assessment in skills needed to:

  • perform harness based work at heights unsupervised
  • supervise entry level and other operators
  • participate in first response rescue.”

Standard work at height training (RIIWHS204E) does not meet all of these requirements.

Did you know that as of January 2012, it is a requirement under WHS legislation that if a fall-arrest system is in use, there must be a rescue procedure in place, and this procedure must be tested to ensure it is effective?
This course provides instruction on the development of an appropriate rescue plan for response to a suspended casualty working in a fall arrest system. Students conduct specialist rescue operations, utilising systems and techniques to raise or lower a casualty to the nearest point of safety. Students will spend a significant amount of time in practical, hands-on rescue scenarios using a range of available rescue products (e.g. Gotcha Kit and Controlled Rate Descent (CRD) rescue scenarios).

Specialist skills: Tower Crane Rescue, Jump Form Rescue, Pole Top Rescue, Escape from EWP

For companies and groups with specific work environments, we have the ability to contextualise this course to specific height scenarios, and teach (and allow students to practically apply) the most appropriate rescue methodologies to use in each case. The most common variations we perform regularly are:

  • Tower Crane Rescue (escaping a tower crane, as well as rescuing a tower-crane operator) (see also: Tower Climbing and Rescue)
  • Jump Form Rescue (rescuing an injured worker trapped within the jump-form (lift-shaft) during building construction)
  • Pole-Top Rescue (rescuing a worker from a pole, tower, antenna or mast)
  • EWP Rescue, or EWP Controlled Descent Escape (self-rescue from an elevating work platform
